Description:
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Practice Guideline Series: Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Cardiac Surgery, Part II: Antibiotic Choice.
The importance of prophylactic antibiotics for cardiac surgery has been clearly demonstrated in a number of placebo-controlled studies completed nearly 30 years ago. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Practice Guideline Series: Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Cardiac Surgery, Part II: Antibiotic Choice is designed to assist physicians and other health care providers in clinical decision-making by describing a range of generally acceptable approaches for the diagnosis, management, or prevention of specific diseases or conditions.
There are numerous publications concerned with the optimal prophylactic antibiotic recommended for cardiac surgery, but many of these protocols compare not only two or more antibiotic regimens but also two different dosing programs, for example, single dose versus multidose, which was addressed in the previous Guideline. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Practice Guideline Series: Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Cardiac Surgery, Part II: Antibiotic Choice will address additional publications in so far as they compare different antibiotic regimens involving comparable duration of multidose antibiotic administration.
